lymphoma: type of cancer involving cells of the immune system, called lymphocytes.

2 types of lymphoma:

1) hodgkin's lymphoma (HL)

2) non-hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) - all other types of lymphoma

HL-develops from specific B-lymphocytes lineage

NHL-may derive from either B-lymphocytes or T-cells, distinguished by unique genetic markers.

these two types may occur at the same places, may be associated with the same symptoms, and often have similar physical examination. however, distinguishable via microscopic examination.

NHL

-subtypes are microscopically distinct, typing based on microscopic appearances as well as the extent of disease.

-most common in two age groups: 16-34years and 55 over.

-multinucleated Reed-Sternberg (the name of two founders of the cells) cells are the histopathology characteristic.
